Catrina at ASM Dome

Nude Structure

This story starts when I was a teenager. My parents owned a cottage in Newbury, Ohio in Kiwanis Lake. My mom, dad, sister and I would go there most every weekend during the summer months.  I was 14 years old in the spring of 1959 as we drove down Rt. 87 in Russel township we would notice the construction of this amazing structure. I think the following year when it was completed we toured the grounds. I marveled at it every time we drove by in our weekly trips to and from our cottage. After my high school graduation in 1962 I was dating an under classmate Pam Koch and I took her on a date to see the dome. I took her picture with the dome and wow I wish I could find that image to post.  Later in 1966 I took my future wife Anne  (m.1967-?) to also see the dome. It was not until many years later(2015) that I would get the opportunity to photograph the star trails and then Catrina with the magical ASM Internation Dome.

We ventured Sunday morning, Aug. 2, 2015, to the ASM Metals Park Dome in Russell Township, Ohio. Arrived before the sun rose above the trees and we were able to get some nice images. I picked a questionable day to shoot nudes at the Dome Park. Several years earlier the ASM International had sold off 500 acres of the parks land to the Geauga Park District and they were having and art show near bty and using the ASM parking lot for overflow parking. So shortly after we began shooting nudes of Catrina a shuttle drove through the park. Shortly after the third shuttle came through the local police came calling. Not one car, not two cars but 3 police cars came calling. They were kind and courteous (and curious) and I am sure just wanted to see the action.   The officers were very nice to us as all eyes were on Catrina as she walked textile less back to our vehicle. I went over to the cruiser and told them we were just packing up. So that ended that wonderful photo session.

Here is a short exert from the ASM International web site:

The 45-acre campus known as Materials Park has been home to the headquarters of ASM International (formerly known as the American Society for Metals) for the past 52 years. Originally completed in 1959, the ASM International headquarters building, 20 miles east of Cleveland in Novelty, Ohio, is the result of the vision of four men, William Hunt Eisenman, one of ASM’s founders and its National Secretary and first Managing Director, Cleveland modern architect John Terence Kelly, architect and engineer Thomas C. Howard of Synergetics Inc., and renowned futurist R. Buckminster Fuller.

With an open latticework geodesic dome arching over a semi-circular office building, ASM International World Headquarters at Materials Park symbolizes humanity’s technological mastery of materials. Hailed 50 years ago for its futuristic design, Materials Park is renowned today for its timelessness. In 2009, Materials Park was named to the National Register of Historic Places, and an exciting renovation was completed in July 2011.
